MARCH   Early Mar   Khajuraho Dance Festival   Khajuraho   In the backdrop of the famous Khajura hotemples this annual week long festival of classical Indian dances are a treat for the performing art lovers.

JUNE   10th day of Tibetanlunar month   Hemis Festival   Leh,Ladakh   Hemis the biggest Buddhist monastery of Ladakh holds this annual celebration on thebirth anniversary of Guru Padmasambhava.Masked dances to the accompaniment of cymbals, drums and long horns are performed. The festival also showcases a colourful ethnic fair, displaying beautiful handicrafts.

JULY   Mid July   Rath Yatra   Puri, Orissaand all ISKCON centers in India   The significance of the important festival is the pulling of three immense sized decorated chariots carrying the deity of Lord Krishna,his sister Subhadra and brother Balbhadra from the famous Jagganath temple of Puri.The festivity is marked with large congregation of devotees from all over India and hosts a number of cultural events and fairs.
 
AUGUST   Mid August   Onam   Kerala   The festival heralds the onset of harvest season in the southern state. The most attractive part of the celebrations, apart from floral decoration of houses, are the famous snake boat regatta along the backwater swhere each boat comprising crews of over hundred men vie for the winning trophy.

SEPTEMBER   Mid Sep   Ganesh Festival   Pune   The popular festival dedicated to Lord Ganesha coincides with Ganesh Chaturthiand presents classical dance and music performances, theatre and film festival and folk dances.

OCTOBER   3rd week Oct.   Dussera / DurgaPuja   All India   This marks the beginning of festive days in India. This event is in memory of the conquest and elimination of the mythological demon king by Lord Rama. In west Bengaland all over the world with presence of Bengali community Durga Puja is celebrated during this time with worship of goddess Durga that itself is a spectacular show transforming every city and town in Bengal into carnival mood. This spectacle led Trinidad carnival specialist Carl Gabriel tocall it the ‘greatest carnival on earth’.

November   1st week of Nov   Diwali   All India   This is the festival of lights celebrated inevery corner of the country. An aerial view ofany city with trillions of teeming lights is aspectacle that is difficult to match any wherein the world. This is a night of gaiety andfrolic when sweets and gifts are exchange damong relatives and friends. Every locality inthe city also hosts mini fairs that has many attractive handicrafts and decorative itemson offer.

NOVEMBER   End Nov   Pushkar Mela   Pushkar   This is an annual religious bathing andoblation ritual at Brahma Sarovar Puskar cantered around which is organised  amassive country fair where anything from ordinary to exquisite is sold.

NOVEMBER   23 – 27 Nov   Beach Festival   Puri   This wonderful beach festival essentiallycelebrates the spirit of life. On the sprawling Puri beach here is a spectacle of ethniccraftsmen of the coastal areas at work, sandsculpturing, folk music and dances.

NOVEMBERDECEMBER   End Nov to Early Dec   Darjeeling Carnival   Darjeeling& Mirik   This is a tourism festival of the Bengal Himalayan region with cultural shows… Twosimultaneous events are held for 10 days at Darjeeling and Mirik, which is called Lakeside Festival.

DECEMBER   Dec   Bishnupur Festival   Bishnupur   The festival celebrates the rich heritage of the town of Vishnupur, noted for its beautiful terracotta temples and elegant silk sarees.

DECEMBER   27th Dec   Dooars Festival   Jalpiaguri   Essentially an eco tourism promotion event this annual affair attracts much tourist interest for its cultural festival of ethnic community folk dances and music.
